Project AWARE is a global movement of scuba divers protecting our ocean planet – one dive at a time. Focused on the critical issues of Sharks in Peril and Marine Debris, Project AWARE empowers thousands of divers in more than 180 countries to work together for a clean, healthy and abundant ocean planet. Project AWARE Foundation is a registered non-profit organization. For more information, visit projectaware.org.
Project AWARE partners with individuals, governments, NGOs and businesses to work towards solutions to the global marine debris crisis and help protect vulnerable shark and ray species.
Project AWARE fights for the prevention and reduction of marine debris. Through Partnerships Against Trash, Project AWARE works with governments, NGOs and businesses to affect change on a global scale. In order to achieve a long-term solution, we must influence at local, national and international levels and prevent trash from entering the ocean in the first place.
Dive Against DebrisTM is Project AWARE’s flagship citizen-science program that empowers scuba divers to remove marine debris from the ocean and report data on the types, quantities and locations of materials collected. As the only underwater debris data collection program of its kind, Dive Against Debris both improves the health of ocean ecosystems through localized volunteer efforts and provides valuable information about underwater debris to help inform policy change.
Sharks & Rays in Peril
Overfishing, bycatch and finning are threatening shark and ray populations across the globe, with the survival of many species at high risk of extinction. Thankfully, divers are some of sharks and rays’ closest allies. Together, Project AWARE divers around the globe are creating a powerful, collective voice for grassroots change, securing stronger safeguards for many shark and ray species under CITES.
